Claire earned her degree in Psychology and certificate in K-8 Education from Seattle Pacific University. She worked with Teach For America as a teacher in New Orleans, Lousiana’s failing schools before being called to leave everything behind and move to Tanzania to start SHADE from the ground up. Claire led SHADE in Tanzania with her husband Mike from 2014-2018, and they have recently moved back to the US. Claire continues as SHADE’s International Director in order to oversee operations in Tanzania, as well as work on partnership development and advocacy for people with albinism from stateside. She and Mike now live in Washington state.
Rev. Jack Grubbs
Rev. Jack Grubbs is an Anglican priest serving at Church of the Apostles in the City, an urban congregation in Baltimore, Maryland. Jack is a graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary and has a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. Prior to being ordained he worked in the non-profit sector promoting micro-enterprise programs in developing countries. He has traveled professionally and with short term mission trips to Central America, the Caribbean and East Africa. In addition to his work as a pastor, Jack also has experience in cross-cultural ministry, organizational growth and development, strategic planning and fundraising. He is a founding member of Shade.
Susan Grubbs earned her degree in Developmental Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and her work life has included a number of ministries and non-profits. Susan has held paid and volunteer positions in two new church plants and supported regional church planting efforts. Most recently she was Director of Prisoner Correspondence at Prison Fellowship Ministries, a Christian outreach started by Chuck Colson. She has traveled to Tanzania to work with orphans and vulnerable children. Susan and Jack have been married for 37 years and are parents of two daughters. Susan serves as Secretary of the Board of Shade.
Carolyn Cuppernull is a communications, public policy and business development executive with 30 years of experience working with corporate, government and nonprofit organizations. Carolyn is a graduate of Ohio University and holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. Carolyn has been actively involved in launching and leading two churches in Northern Virginia. Most recently she served as Senior Warden on the Vestry and as a Sunday School teacher. After a 2013 mission trip with a church team including her oldest daughter, Carolyn was moved by the needs of the forgotten children in Tanzania, yet inspired by their passion for learning and loving Jesus Christ. Carolyn is a founding member of Shade and serves as a member of the Board of Directors as Treasurer. Additionally, she is a member of the Shade Development Committee. Carolyn is married to Gary, and together they are raising two daughters.
Esmé received her doctorate in Immunology from Plymouth, UK and came to the US for a fellowship at NIH. She later moved into vaccine research where she has worked for many years. Esmé was born in Tanzania and has traveled to Shinyanga to work with vulnerable children there. She is a founding member of SHADE, and is involved with the development committee. Esmé and Peter, her husband of 26 years, live in Reston, Virginia.
